Skikda - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (283 words)
Skikda (Arabic: ولاية سكيكدة) is a wilaya of north eastern Algeria.
Formerly known as Philippeville until the end of independance war in 1962, Skikda was founded in 1838 by the french on the ruins of an ancient Phoenician city which later flourished as a big roman city called "Rusicade" a Punic word which means "Promontory of fire".
Skikda is known for the slaughters of 1955 during which thousands of unarmed civilians were grouped in the city stadium and executed by the french paratroopers and special forces.
