Location of Wardner, Idaho

Silver Mountain Resort is a ski area in the Coeur d'Alene National Forest in northern Idaho, just south of Kellogg in Shoshone County. Originally opened as Jackass Ski Bowl in January 1968 on Wardner Peak, the name was changed to Silverhorn in 1973. The name was changed to Silver Mountain in 1990, with the addition of the new gondola and the opening of runs on Kellogg Peak. History

Jackass Ski Bowl, near Wardner, Idaho, was constructed in 1967 on lands leased from the Bunker Hill Mining Company. Named for Noah Kellogg's donkey, the ski area began operations in January 1968, but several years of poor skiing weather caused the operation to discontinue. Assets were liquidated in a foreclosure sale by the SBA in August 1973, and were purchased by Bunker Hill for $100,000. The ski facility was reorganized as Silverhorn ski area under the ownership of Shoshone Recreation, Inc. The Bunker Hill smelter closed in 1982 resulting in economic hardship to the area. To diversify and expand the local the economy, an increased focus was placed on tourism, primarily through the ski area. The ski area was accessed by a difficult and dangerous twisting mountain road, which climbed from the northwest and terminated in a parking lot at 5000 feet (1524 m), mid-mountain of Wardner Peak. In December 1987, Congress approved a $6.4 million to assist in the construction of the gondola. Von Roll Tramways, a Swiss lift manufacturing company, agreed to guarantee the remaining funds needed to construct the Resort. Silver Mountain's vertical drop is 2200 feet (1920 m) and its slopes are north-facing, on two mountains: Kellogg Peak, with a summit of 6300 feet (1920 m) and Wardner Peak at 6200 feet (1890 m). There are 67 named trails plus extensive off-piste areas, and 7 lifts: 1 gondola (service to the parking lot in Kellogg), 5 chairlifts (1 Quad, 2 Triple, 2 Double), and a surface tow. There are 112 gondola cabins and 45 towers along the 3.1 mile (5.0 km) trip, the longest single stage people carrier in the world.
