Sidney J. Blatt, 'Representational Structures in Psychopathology' (11746 words)
By studying behavioral patterns of attachment and separation between mothers and their infants in the first eighteen months of life, Bowlby, Ainsworth, Main and others distinguished secure attachment from several types of insecure attachment, and demonstrated the impact of these attachment styles on subsequent behavior during later childhood years.
As discussed by Bowlby, Ainsworth, Bretherton and others, the security of attachment, however, will also be influenced by the way the mother and the child manage separations and other disruptions that naturally occur to interrupt this attachment bond.
The various levels of cognitive structures and schema from boundary articulation to integrity, initially established in an interpersonal context, are extended as generalized cognitive structures that are used to understand aspects of both the interpersonal and the impersonal world.
