Shamu Shows

The show was recently changed at all three SeaWorld parks. The new show, dubbed "Believe", is more spiritual and involves an audience hand signal, an emotional soundtrack, and the giving of a gift to a chosen child to inspire. The new show involves multiple cameras placed around the stadium and clips of video mixed with live audience shots during the presentation and story. It also has more trainers than ever before. The name "Shamu" is actually a stage name shared by many adult orcas, male or female, at SeaWorld. The first Shamu, a female, was captured in Puget Sound in 1965 and died on August 23, 1971. The history of Baby Shamu

Shamu is the name of the first female orca ever captured, in which she was supposed to be a companion for Namu. Hence, the name Shamu means friend of Namu. Shamu is 100% Southern Resident orca who was likely born in 1961 and captured in Puget Sound in 1965. Shamu and Namu resided in the care of Seattle Marine Aquarium, but both orcas experienced social conflicts. Shamu was then obtained by SeaWorld San Diego on December 20, 1965. She performed in several shows and eventually died on August 23, 1971. Her final year of performing in front of an audience was mired in controversy. She was retired from performing after an incident caught on tape where she attacked a female audience member which was supposed to ride her. http://www.livevideo.com/video/trigirl/16E93BF4C3764C26B8B0193ED60C96C9/shamu-killer-whale-attacks-gir.aspx Year 1961 (MCMLXI) was a common year starting on Sunday (link will display full calendar) of the Gregorian calendar. ... is the 354th day of the year (355th in leap years) in the Gregorian calendar. ... Although today, "Shamu," "Namu," and "Ramu" are stage names given to all of the orcas residing within the SeaWorld parks, in which the names are trademarked. However, the first Baby Shamu is Kalina, which is the first surviving orca born in captivity on September 26, 1985. Notably, ten orca calves had been born in captivity before 1985, but five were stillborn and the others all died within two months of their births. Respectively, Kalina's parents Katina and Winston were bestowed the names Namu (Katina) and Ramu (Winston). Furthermore, the first Grandbaby Shamu is given to Kalina's first calf born on February 2, 1993 - a son named Keet. Continually, the first Great Grandbaby Shamu is given to first calf born on December 21, 2004 - a daughter named Kalia. Believe

"Believe" at all three parks currently features a video of a young boy inspired by an orca who grows up to be the primary character of the show - a Shamu trainer. This male trainer then chooses a young audience member, asking what is his or her desired occupation, and giving the child a carved Shamu necklace so that the child can "Believe." According to the San Diego Union Tribune Article "Keep Your Eye On The Big Mammals" dated 6.15.06, "The Show is about the moment when we all formulated the dream to be something in our lives, whatever that may have been. To follow a path and dream about it." "In the show you see a boy whose dream is to be a trainer with killer whales, but it could be anything. If you believe and put your heart and mind to it, you can do it!" Image File history File links Emblem-important. ...

At the beginning of "Believe", members of the United States Armed Forces along with members of allied forces around the world are recognized while they are applauded by the audience. The portion of the audience with ties to military is always high given the large Marine Corps and Navy presence in San Diego. The sea lions Clyde and Seamore at SeaWorld San Diego poke fun at the new Believe show by parodying it and muttering "Believe it!" in an undertone every time they say anything. The female trainers of Clyde and Seamore also poke fun at the Shamu trainers by saying that they had their teeth whitened and had "discreet cosmetic adjustments". The armed forces of the United States of America consist of the United States Army United States Navy United States Air Force United States Marine Corps United States Coast Guard Note: The United States Coast Guard has both military and law enforcement functions. ...

All three SeaWorld parks have a day show (Believe) and an evening show, Shamu Rocks and Shamu Rocks Texas (in San Antonio only).

"Shamu Rocks Texas" and is more light-hearted in tone, beginning with a dance contest where audience members are shown in succession dancing on the megatron screen, and the winner (usually a small child, but sometimes a gregarious adult) receives a Shamu plush toy. The female trainers have more prominence in the show, feeding the orcas, swimming with them, and riding on their backs. The only prominent male cast member is the emcee who, dressed in rodeo attire, announces the winner of the dance contest. The show ends with a video tribute to the State of Texas and to the United States Armed Forces, and female trainers riding the orcas from one end of the tank to the other waving American flags with fireworks displayed at either end of the pool. This patriotic theme was probably selected for the San Antonio park due to its proximity to three Air Force Bases and the fact that military personnel and their families make up a substantial part of that park's clientele. A Master of Ceremonies or MC is the host of a staged event or other performance. ...

SeaWorld Orlando and SeaWorld San Diego have Christmas shows during the month of December. Orlando's new show is called Shamu Mircles and San Diego's show is called Shamu's Christmas Night.

Parodies and Shamu in popular culture
