Serart is a collaboration between folk artist Arto Tunçboyacıyan and Serj Tankian, lead singer of System of a Down. It is the first release on Tankian's own label, Serjical Strike Records. The music off the self-titled album is not easy to categorize; indeed one could argue that the tracks are a fusion of many different beats, rhythms and riffs from several types of music and several different countries. The track "Cinema" contains a jazzy base line with scat vocals, but switches suddenly to an oriental beat and then to a rock sound. "Love is the Peace" starts off with the sounds of guns being fired and explosions, realistically portraying the sounds of war, which than follows with Arto's powerful chant. Arto Tunçboyacıyan (born 1957 in Istanbul, Turkey) is a multi-instrumentalist avant-garde folk artist who appeared on more than 200 records in Europe before arriving in the United States, where he went to work with numerous jazz legends including Chet Baker, Al Di Meola, and Joe Zawinul... Serart is Serj Tankian from System of a Down with Arto Tuncboyaciyan, a percussionist who played on System of a Down's Toxicity album.
Collectively, their music is described as The music on SERART is both "cross genre and cross cultural," an exotic and eclectic blend of electronica, poetry, Middle Eastern melodies, Pan-African rhythms, classical motifs melded with volleys of percussion, indeed a far cry from what we know from System of a Down.
Serj Tankian: Serart to me is like a compelling collaboration between two artists and it represents a moment in time.
