Second Cup is a large Canadian-owned chain of cafés, the largest specialty coffee retailer in Canada. Founded in 1975 by Tom Culligan and Frank O'Dea, Culligan eventually purchased O'Dea's shares. After building it to a 150-store chain, he sold it in 1988 to Michael Bregman, the founder of Marvelous Muffins. Today, the company is owned by Cara Operations Limited. There are close to 500 Second Cup outlets across Canada. Second Cup is basically the Canadian version of Starbucks. Second Cup offers a wide variety of expresso based drinks, under the category dubbed 'The Europeans". All such drinks include single, double, or triple shots of their signature expresso, Expresso Forte. In addition to expresso, these drinks usually contain milk abd various creamy syrups, produced by Second Cup corporations, and Torani syrups which are manufactured separately. All European drink can also be made with Decaffeinated Expresso and can also be made iced. Torani syrups are also used in the making of the Second Cup Italian sodas, a chilled mixture of carbonated water, Torani and ice. In addition to Italian sodas and European expresso based beverages, Second Cup also offers steamed milk, apple cider, dark, white and vanilla bean hot chocolate and a variety of frozen blended drinks. These cold drinks include a machine churned mix of expresso, milk and sugar called the 'Icepresso Chiller', the 'frrrozen hot chocolate', 'Fruizzis' and 'Tiamos'. Fruizzis are a blend of ice, milk and fruit flavored syrup. Tiamos are a blend of organic teas, juices, and ice. Both have been extremely popular with canadians but are currently discontinued. Second Cup also offers a wide variety of about twenty teas. Over the past few years, Second Cup has migrated from being solely a café to becoming a retail joint. They have began to sell and market their boxed teas, travel carafes and mugs, gift baskets, chocolate covered expresso beans, coffee beans, and various ceramic Second Cup novelties. Sales have grown significantly and indicate a positive response to this new concept of coffee shop retail.


The current promotion at Second Cup is a Green Tea Latte or Green Tea Chiller paired with their signature Green Tea White Chocolate Cookie. The Green Tea Chiller can also be substituted for a Green Tea Passionfruit Chiller.
