Sanderson is a census-designated place located in Terrell County, Texas. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 861. It is the county seat of Terrell County6.

Sanderson is located at 30°8'28" North, 102°23'45" West (30.141024, -102.395924)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 10.9 km˛ (4.2 mi˛). 10.9 km˛ (4.2 mi˛) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 861 people, 356 households, and 237 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 79.3/km˛ (205.7/mi˛). There are 635 housing units at an average density of 58.5/km˛ (151.7/mi˛). The racial makeup of the CDP is 86.88% White, 0.00% African American, 2.09% Native American, 0.70% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 9.18% from other races, and 1.16% from two or more races. 51.45% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 356 households out of which 29.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.4% are married couples living together, 8.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.4% are non-families. 32.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 18.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.42 and the average family size is 3.08.


In the CDP the population is spread out with 25.9% under the age of 18, 5.6% from 18 to 24, 22.1% from 25 to 44, 26.4% from 45 to 64, and 20.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 43 years. For every 100 females there are 97.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.2 males.


The median income for a household in the CDP is $23,594, and the median income for a family is $29,500. Males have a median income of $22,946 versus $14,453 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $13,714. 26.9% of the population and 21.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 33.5% of those under the age of 18 and 31.4% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
