Home to the ruins of the small Cistercian Abbey of Saddell. This was founded in 1160 by the Somerled, the warrior King, whose descendants became the Clan MacDonald and eventual Lords of the Isles. Stone carving was a speciality at Saddell and examples of this exist in the Abbey grounds.
The construction of Saddell Castle, located a quarter of a mile to the southeast, in the early 16th century used much of the stone from the Abbey.
