The Royal Typewriter Company was a leading manufacturer of typewriters along with Underwood and Remington. Founded by E.B. Hess, the Royal 1 was introduced in 1906. By 1923 Hess was reported to have collected more than 140 different patents dealing with typewriter technology. This Smith Premier typewriter, purchased around the end of the 19th century, was found abandoned in the Bodie ghost town. ... The Underwood typewriter was the forerunner of the modern typewriter. ... E. Remington and Sons was a manufacturer of firearms and typewriters. ...


The upright Royal 10 was introduced in 1914. With beveled glass sides, the Royal 10 that would become one of the market leaders.


Early model 10's had two planes of glass on each side while later models were made with one per side.


The Royal Quiet Deluxe was the flagship of the Royal portable models that were introduced in 1926. In the late 1950's, these portable models became available in a variety of vibrant colors.


The Royal Typewriter Company (by this time known as the Royal McBee Typewriter Company) was purchased by Litton Industries in the late 1970s and ceased the manufacture of typewriters.
