The Royal Radar Establishment, or RRE, formerly the Telecommunications Research Establishent, or TRE, moved to Malvern, Worcestershire from Swanage and Christchurch in 1942 after it was decided it was too vulnerable to German commando raids. It split on June 2, 2001 into two parts, a government body called DSTL (Defence Science and Technology Laboratory), and a company destined for privatisation, QinetiQ.

The Royal Signals and Radar Establishment (RSRE) was a scientific research establishment within the Ministry of Defence's Defence Procurement Agency of the United Kingdom, located primarily at Malvern in Worcestershire.
It was formed in the 1970s in an amalgamation of earlier research establishments including the Royal Radar Establishment (RRE).
In April 1991 RSRE amalgamated with other defence research establishments to form the Defence Research Agency, which in April 1995 amalgamated with more organisations to form the Defence Evaluation and Research Agency.

The Telecommunications Research Establishment (TRE) was established in Worth Matravers, which is four miles to the west of Swanage, in May 1940, as the central research group for RAF applications of radar.
Another major wartime development was H2S radar using the newly developed cavity magnetron, for use by RAF bombers to identify ground targets for night and all-weather bombing.
TRE was combined with the Army Radar Establishment in 1953 to become the Radar Research Establishment - and was renamed the Royal Radar Establishment in 1957.
