Roosevelt Boulevard, or the Boulevard as it is normally called, is a major traffic artery that connects Center City Philadelphia (Downtown) with the Northeast section. Proposed in 1903 by then-mayor Samuel H. Ashbridge, it originally extended from Broad Street to the Torresdale neighborhood, and in its existance was first named Torresdale Boulevard, then Northeast Boulevard in 1914 when the road was completed, and then Roosevelt Boulevard (after Theodore Roosevelt) when the road was extended to the Pennypack Creek area in 1918. The road was designed US 1 in 1926, and was extended through Philadelphia to the neighboring Bucks Country in the post-World War Two years. The Roosevelt Expressway was built as a connection between the boulevard and the nearby Schuylkill Expressway (I-76). The Schuylkill Expressway (I-76) runs along the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia. ... There is also a game called Interstate 76, developed by Activision and referring to the year 1976. ...

There have been several plans to change the boulevard into a expressway-like artery, like the Roosevelt Expressway itself, but no such plans have been acted upon.

Today, Roosevelt Boulevard is among the most congested arteries in the country. The second and third-worst intersections in the country are both found on the Boulevard, only a mile apart from each other. Traffic cameras have been placed at both of those intersections and are fully operational as of June 1st, 2005.
