Grant left Red Dwarf after the sixth series, saying he wished to "have more on my tombstone than Red Dwarf". He has since written 2 TV series, Dark Ages and The Strangerers, and has written four solo books. He appeared in the episode "Backwards" as a man who unsmoked a cigarette.

Some of his upcoming projects include Fat, a new novel and an animated series entitled Cruel Aliens.
