Ripton is a town located in Addison County, Vermont. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 556.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 128.3 km˛ (49.5 mi˛). 128.3 km˛ (49.5 mi˛) of it is land and 0.02% is water.


As of the census2 of 2000, there are 556 people, 210 households, and 152 families residing in the town. The population density is 4.3/km˛ (11.2/mi˛). There are 283 housing units at an average density of 2.2/km˛ (5.7/mi˛). The racial makeup of the town is 97.66% White, 0.18% African American, 0.18% Native American, 0.36% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.18% from other races, and 1.44% from two or more races. 0.54% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 210 households out of which 38.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.2% are married couples living together, 11.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.6% are non-families. 22.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 5.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.54 and the average family size is 2.89.

In the town the population is spread out with 26.1% under the age of 18, 6.3% from 18 to 24, 30.4% from 25 to 44, 29.0% from 45 to 64, and 8.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 113.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 106.5 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $39,583, and the median income for a family is $47,813. Males have a median income of $36,250 versus $30,893 for females. The per capita income for the town is $19,597. 15.6% of the population and 10.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 25.2% of those under the age of 18 and 7.4% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

About 1859, Samuel Damon, the Ripton town wit and historian, told one version: "It has its present size obtained by ripping from other towns." Although Ripton did get some land from surrounding towns, Damon's story is not the origin of the town's name.
In Connecticut it is thought that the Ripton Society took its name from Ripton in Huntingdonshire, England.
In 1953, the Vermont Legislature named Robert Frost Mountain, in the northwestern part of town, in his honor.
