Encyclopedia > Reticuloendothelial system

The reticuloendothelial system (RES), part of the immune system, consists of the phagocytic cells located in reticular connective tissue, primarily monocytes and macrophages. These cells accumulate in lymph nodes and the spleen. The Kupffer cells of the liver and tissue histiocytes are also part of the RES. The immune system is the system of specialized cells and organs that protect an organism from outside biological influences. ... Phagocytosis (literally, cell eating) is a form of endocytosis where large particles are enveloped by the cell membrane of a (usually larger) cell and internalized to form a phagosome, or food vacuole. ... Reticular connective tissue are a network of reticular fibers (fine collagen) that form a soft skeleton (stroma) to support the lymphoid organs (lymph nodes, bone marrow, and spleen. ... Monocyte A monocyte is a leukocyte, part of the human bodys immune system that protect against blood-borne pathogens and move quickly to sites of infection in the tissues. ... A macrophage of a mouse stretching its arms to engulf two particles, possibly pathogens Macrophages (Greek: big eaters, makros = long, phagein = eat) are white blood cells, more specifically phagocytes, acting in the nonspecific defense as well as the specific defense system of vertebrate animals. ... Structure of the lymph node. ... The spleen is a ductless, vertebrate gland that is not necessary for life but is closely associated with the circulatory system, where it functions in the destruction of old red blood cells in holding a reservoir of blood. ... Kupffer cells are reticulendothelial cells located in the liver. ... The liver is the largest internal organ in the human body. ... A Histiocyte is a cell that is part of the human immune system. ...

Mononuclear phagocytic system and lymphoreticular system are synonymous with RES.

That is because this very important system is not composed of visceral organs, but rather macrophages that are found in connective tissue.
The ECF is composed of the fluid in the blood stream (20%) and the fluid outside the blood stream (80%) in the connective tissues.
