The Rajya Sabha (House of States) is the upper house of the federal parliament of India. Membership is limited to 250 members, 12 of whom are chosen by the president for their expertise in specific fields of art, literature, science, and social services. These members are known as nominated members. The remainder of the body is elected by India's respective state and territorial legislatures. The Representation of the People Act, 1950, had laid down a specific condition concerning eligibility for election to the Rajya Sabha: to be a member of the house from a state, one must be ordinarily resident in the state.
