A quay, pronounced 'key,' 'kay,' is a wharf or bank where ships and other vessels are loaded. A quay is constructed parallel to the bank of a waterway. The word is commonly used in Britain and Australia. Its French language counterpart Quai is common in francophone countries, but it is rather rare in everyday usage elsewhere. In Toronto there is a quay named Queen's Quay In Paris, it refers to the borders of the river Seine, together with its expressways and bouquinistes (bookstalls).
