Pulaski is a town located in Pulaski County, Virginia. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 9,473. It is the county seat of Pulaski County6.


Pulaski is located at 37°3'0" North, 80°46'20" West (37.050094, -80.772193)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 20.3 km˛ (7.8 mi˛). 20.3 km˛ (7.8 mi˛) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.


As of the census2 of 2000, there are 9,473 people, 4,173 households, and 2,670 families residing in the town. The population density is 467.7/km˛ (1,211.2/mi˛). There are 4,517 housing units at an average density of 223.0/km˛ (577.6/mi˛). The racial makeup of the town is 89.55% White, 7.75% African American, 0.12% Native American, 0.36% Asian, 0.08% Pacific Islander, 0.96% from other races, and 1.18% from two or more races. 2.02% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 4,173 households out of which 25.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.8% are married couples living together, 14.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 36.0% are non-families. 31.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.24 and the average family size is 2.80.

In the town the population is spread out with 21.7% under the age of 18, 7.7% from 18 to 24, 27.3% from 25 to 44, 25.0% from 45 to 64, and 18.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 87.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 83.4 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $25,481, and the median income for a family is $36,339. Males have a median income of $28,054 versus $20,177 for females. The per capita income for the town is $21,338. 21.8% of the population and 16.1% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 30.7% of those under the age of 18 and 19.2% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
