Encyclopedia > Puerto Toro

Puerto Toro is a small Chilean town on Navarino Island. It is the southernmost inhabited spot on the globe. Its latitude and longitude are 55°05′ S 67°06′ W. Puerto Toro is inhabited by about 50 fishermen and their families.

Over a hundred years ago, Puerto Toro was one of the most important towns in southern Tierra del Fuego due to a gold fever. Once it was over, however, Puerto Toro's importance ceased. Today, Puerto Toro is known for the "centolla", the prized southern king crab.
