He was born and died in Tzu-ch'uan in the Shandong province and worked as a school teacher. He was a failed scholar and decided to give up his dream of becoming an official. He opened a tea house and invited his guests to tell stories, then he would compile the tales and write them. These were compiled into his Strange Tales from a Chinese Studio. The work has 431 tales and was instantly popular even though written in the vernacular. The choice of subject matter, unusual/supernatural, was very strange at the time. The Chinese ghost story is, to some extent, different from those of Western ghost stories. To extend the definition, Eastern ghost story generally differs from those done by the westerners. The main objective of the ghost might just be revenge or scare people to death. Pu song ling had a widespread ghost story in which almost every Chinese knew. It is called HuaPi that is regarding a spirit that murders people, especially male by swifting its physical appearance to a beautiful woman. When the victim was disguised by the fake appearance, the spirit would go further. Often times after having a sexual behavior while the male are exhausted and falling asleep, the ghost extracts their hearts and eat them.
