The Progenitor Virus was the first mutagenic virus ever discovered. It would become the basis from which the Umbrella Corporation's most successful mutegenic viruses would stem. It was discovered on December 4th, 1967 by Dr. James Marcus, Dr. Edward Ashford, and Lord Ozwell E. Spencer. Umbrella corporate logo The Umbrella Corporation (also known as Umbrella, Inc. ...

Research showed that the cells infected with the virus would undergo a very violent and uncontrolled cellular change through the mutation of the host's genes. This caused increased aggressiveness and size increase in non-mammals, while mammals would exhibit various new attributes, including the ones shown in the non-mammals. However, the results weren't suitable for Umbrella's plans, being inefficient and uncoordinated bio-organic weapons.

James Marcus then combined the Progenitor virus with leech DNA, creating the T-Virus. William Birkin and Albert Wesker assassinated Marcus and continued his research at the Spencer Mansion. Here, William experimented on Lisa Trevor with new variants of the T-Virus on orders from a head Umbrella researcher. These experiments led to the G-Virus, created by mixing the T-Virus with the Ebola virus and a range of unknown chemicals. T-Virus - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (2225 words)
The Ebola virus proved to be unable to survive outside a human host for more than a few days due to its extreme sensitivity to ultraviolet radiation.
The virus acts by stimulating pre and post-mortem cellular growth, with the unfortunate side-effect of basically killing the host in the process.
However, the virus really can be transmitted by water, as proven in Resident Evil 2, in which rats which had eaten samples of the T-Virus infected the water supply of Raccoon City, leading to the historical zombie epidemic that led to the city's destruction.
