Encyclopedia > Pittsburgh DMA

The Pittsburgh DMA is part of the Pittsburgh Tri-State region and is a larger extension of the Pittsburgh Metro Area. It is primarly a definition of the reach of the Pittsburgh media (and thus fanbase and "local" news area) as defined by Neilsen in an exclusive sense. The area is actually smaller then the true area of Pittsburgh media reach, since many counties of east central Ohio and the West Virginia panhandle are served exclusively by some Pittsburgh affilates, but not included in Neilsen's defined area for Pittsburgh. The counties that are excluded from the official Neilsen DMA for Pittsburgh,(though the average viewer in those excluded areas would see little difference between media there opposed to in downtown Pittsburgh other then a few additional affilates) have brought about the more inclusive yet loosely defined Pittsburgh Tri-State term.
