Petaluma High School is located in the relatively small town of Petaluma, California. Though known for its FFA and other agricultural programs, Petaluma High is home to students with different interests and unique backgrounds. With its exchange student program, every year students from all over the world come to Petaluma High to live with a family and take part in school activities, while getting an education at this regionally accredited public school. Though a public school, Petaluma High offers many advanced placement and honors courses for students looking to get ahead in college. The languages offered include Spanish and French, both of which have levels up to level five. The school (along with nearby Casa Grande High) is set to a “block schedule”, made so that while there are only three (or four if students choose to take a before school class known as “zero hour”) classes. These classes are longer, giving students the time for both learning in class, and doing homework and asking any questions on homework. Also with this block schedule students have a tutorial time in between either 1st and 2nd periods on A days, or 4th and 5th periods on B days, this tutorial time can be used to be with friends, but it is more widely used to go to classes when they need help on homework, or when they were confused on the lesson on the previous day. Students who take advanced placement and honors classes are students looking to excel, and in 2007 four students from Petaluma High are currently attending Stanford, one at Carnegie Mellon and many others attending private, UC, and state schools. (Not to mention a number of students who choose to attend the nearby Santa Rosa Junior College for two years before transferring to another school.) The current principal is Brian Howard. The assistant principals are Eric Hoppes, Linda Scheele, and Jennifer Zavoiko. The term public school has three distinct meanings: In the USA and Canada, elementary or secondary school supported and administered by state and local officials. ...
