Perry County is a county located in the state of Mississippi. As of 2000, the population is 12,138. Its county seat is New Augusta6.


Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,684 km˛ (650 mi˛). 1,676 km˛ (647 mi˛) of it is land and 8 km˛ (3 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 0.46% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 12,138 people, 4,420 households, and 3,332 families residing in the county. The population density is 7/km˛ (19/mi˛). There are 5,107 housing units at an average density of 3/km˛ (8/mi˛). The racial makeup of the county is 76.17% White, 22.59% Black or African American, 0.33% Native American, 0.12% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 0.28% from other races, and 0.47% from two or more races. 1.01% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 4,420 households out of which 37.60% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.10% are married couples living together, 13.20% have a female householder with no husband present, and 24.60% are non-families. 21.90% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.70% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.72 and the average family size is 3.18.


In the county the population is spread out with 28.70% under the age of 18, 10.00% from 18 to 24, 28.00% from 25 to 44, 22.20% from 45 to 64, and 11.10% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 95.60 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.10 males.


The median income for a household in the county is $27,189, and the median income for a family is $32,791. Males have a median income of $29,130 versus $18,632 for females. The per capita income for the county is $12,837. 22.00% of the population and 19.60% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 28.60% of those under the age of 18 and 25.50% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Oliver Hazard Perry (1785-1819) was the American naval officer in command during the Sept. 10, 1813, victory on Lake Erie, one of the great American naval triumphs of the War of 1812.
Perry was in command of a flotilla at Newport, Va., when war broke out in 1812, but he was given command of American naval forces on Lake Erie in March 1813.
Perry was honored on 90-cent postage stamps of the late 19th century; this one is from 1879.
