Encyclopedia > Periodic table (extended)

An extended periodic table was suggested by Glenn T. Seaborg in 1969. It is a logical extension of the principles behind the standard periodic table to include possible undiscovered chemical elements. All of the undiscovered elements are named by the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) systematic element name standard of creating a generic name until it has been discovered, confirmed and an official name approved. Glenn Theodore Seaborg (April 19, 1912 – February 25, 1999) won the 1951 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for discoveries in the chemistry of the transuranium elements,[1] contributed to the discovery and isolation of ten elements, developed the actinide concept and was the first to propose the actinide series which led... Also: 1969 (Stargate SG-1) episode. ... The Periodic Table redirects here. ... The periodic table of the chemical elements A chemical element, or element, is a type of atom that is defined by its atomic number; that is, by the number of protons in its nucleus. ... IUPAC logo The International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) (Pronounced as eye-you-pack) is an international non-governmental organization established in 1919 devoted to the advancement of chemistry. ... In chemistry, heavy transuranic elements receive a permanent trivial name and symbol only after their synthesis has been confirmed. ...

The blue symbol on top of each column shows the placement of each element in each block in the periodic table. It does not always indicate the number of electrons in the orbital (e.g. copper). The red number at the left of each row shows the period: the last electron shell. For other uses, see Copper (disambiguation). ... Example of a sodium electron shell model An electron shell, also known as a main energy level, is a group of atomic orbitals with the same value of the principal quantum number n. ...

Helium is placed next to hydrogen instead of on top of neon because it is part of the s2 group. For other uses, see Helium (disambiguation). ... General Name, Symbol, Number hydrogen, H, 1 Chemical series nonmetals Group, Period, Block 1, 1, s Appearance colorless Atomic mass 1. ... For other uses, see Neon (disambiguation). ...

Chemistry: WebElements Periodic Table (426 words)
The periodic "law" of chemistry recognises that many properties of the chemical elements are periodic functions of their atomic number (the number of protons within the element's atomic nucleus).
The periodic table is an arrangement of the chemical elements ordered by atomic number in columns (groups) and rows (periods) presented so as to emphasize their periodic properties.
The relative merits of various other periodic table organisations is still the subject of debate.
