Allegations of Internet censorship

Per the Children's Internet Protection Act, on June 28, 2002 an Internet filter was placed on the entire school district. The filter was the "X-STOP R2000," purchased from 8e6 Technologies Incorporated[1], and it is acknowledged internally that this is a "one-size-fits-all" filter[1] that places the same limits on Internet access to kindergartners as to 12th graders. Prior to this point, the entire district had uncensored Internet access; 8e6 Technologies maintains a database of "offensive sites," which is consistently updated. However, the district may, at its discretion, add sites to the filter's list of "offensive sites." The school is notified of these "offensive sites" by teachers through a web portal[2], and their pending status (and often justification) is also made public. The school has also blocked social networking websites such as Facebook, MySpace, and Xanga, and, mysteriously, the domain seller site GoDaddy[3] and justifying their blocking (at least on an internal basis) by classifying the sites as "obscene," though the sites are most definitely not obscene as defined by CIPA standards and Supreme Court rulings on obscene material.[citation needed] A social network is a map of the relationships between individuals, indicating the ways in which they are connected through various social familiarities ranging from casual acquaintance to close familial bonds. ...
