History

The club was founded in 1890 in Smyrna (now İzmir, Turkey). Smyrna had a flourishing Hellenic population at the time, with athletic clubs, schools, etc. This was a continuation of the Greek presence and cultural prevalence in the area since the ancient times (cf. ancient Ionia). After the Asia Minor Catastrophe, which saw the expulsion of the Greek population of Anatolia by the Turkish army of Kemal Atatürk in 1922, the Smyrnan refugees in Athens founded the suburb of Nea Smyrni (New Smyrna), and Panionios continued its sport activities there. 1890 (MDCCCXC) was a common year starting on Wednesday (see link for calendar) of the Gregorian calendar (or a common year starting on Friday of the Julian calendar). ... Panionios has spent nearly its entire history in the Greek First Division (now called 'Superleague'), having missed out from competing in Greek football's top division only twice in its more than one hundred year history. Within this, Panionios rose quite often to the high levels, with top achievement in terms of the league being the 2nd position that the club reached in 1971, losing the title to AEK.
