As of the census2 of 2000, there are 19,306 people, 7,621 households, and 5,342 families residing in the county. The population density is 19/km˛ (48/mi˛). There are 8,348 housing units at an average density of 8/km˛ (21/mi˛). The racial makeup of the county is 97.90% White, 0.63% Black or African American, 0.31% Native American, 0.17% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.25% from other races, and 0.73% from two or more races. 0.56% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 7,621 households out of which 32.40% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.60% are married couples living together, 8.60% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.90% are non-families. 26.20% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.00% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.49 and the average family size is 3.00.
In the county the population is spread out with 25.70% under the age of 18, 8.00% from 18 to 24, 28.00% from 25 to 44, 23.50% from 45 to 64, and 14.90% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 96.70 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.70 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $31,564, and the median income for a family is $38,505. Males have a median income of $28,658 versus $20,238 for females. The per capita income for the county is $16,717. 12.40% of the population and 9.00% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 16.10% of those under the age of 18 and 12.90% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

GEORGE W. CAMPBELL, a native of the county of which he is now Treasurer, was born at Lick Creek, August 12, 1843, a son of Maxwell and Sarah (Field) Campbell, who were natives respectively of North Carolina and Kentucky, and who were among the pioneers of OrangeCounty, Indiana.
THOMAS V. CLAXTON was born in OrangeCounty, February 24, 1838, the son of Jeremiah and Delilah (Pierce) Claxton, the father a Kentuckian and the mother a Pennsylvanian.
JESSE CLEMENTS, a prominent farmer of Jackson Township, is a native of OrangeCounty, Ind., and was born September 30, 1865.
JAMES A. FROST was born in Jessamine County, Ky., March 4, 1820, and is the son of Simeon and Mary (Beckham) Frost, the former being born in Jessamine County, July 13, 1792, and latter born in Orange Co., Va., August 2, 1792.
GEORGE W. HARMON is a native of OrangeCounty, Ind., and a son of Asa and Nancy A. (Sullivan) Harmon.
WILLIAM W. LEWIS, a native of the county in which he yet resides and a descendant of a pioneer family of LawrenceCounty, Indiana was born December 21, 1827, and is the third son and only survivor in a family of twelve children born to D. and A. (Oaks) Lewis.
