Encyclopedia > Optical imaging

Optical imaging is a method to in neuroscience used to measure activation of the cortex. The skull of an animal is removed and the cortex of the animal is recorded using a video camera. Changes in metabolism in a cortical area will show up as a darkening of the area. This method has been used to for example map somatosensory receptive fields in cortex as well as visual receptive fields (occular dominance columns, orientation selectivity).
