State Route 7 is a north-south state highway in the southern and eastern portions of the U.S. state of Ohio. At just over 337 miles in length, it is the longest state route in Ohio. Its southern terminus is an interchange with U.S. Route 52 just west of Chesapeake. Its northern terminus also serves as the eastern terminus of State Route 531 in Conneaut. The path of State Route 7 stays within five miles of the Ohio River (Ohio's border with West Virginia) for the southern portion, with the river being visible from much of the route. The road also remains within ten miles of the Pennsylvania state line for the northern portion. Chesapeake Bypass

Historical map of the Chesapeake Bypass.
Historical map of the Chesapeake Bypass.
  • The Chesapeake bypass from the "Sybene interchange" to the "1989 interchange" has a varied history. The original U.S. Route 52 alignment was a two-lane highway. In 1961, a four-lane expressway was constructed from Sheridan to Chesapeake ending at the "Chesapeake interchange".
    • The Chesapeake interchange was originally a two-lane roadway that carried traffic from the four-lane U.S. Route 52 expressway into downtown Chesapeake so that traffic could cross into Huntington, West Virginia. For many years, stub roadways existed indicating a future expansion of the four-lane expressway eastward.
    • U.S. Route 52 originally crossed at the present-day Robert C. Byrd Bridge in Chesapeake.
    • In 1979, the U.S. Route 52 designation moved to the Nick Joe Rahall II Bridge, as tolls on that span were removed that year. The designation for the bridge and the expressway from the Ohio River crossing to Interstate 64 and West Virginia Route 94 was removed. State Route 7 was then signed on the former U.S. Route 52 from the Sybene interchange to the Chesapeake interchange, and then to downtown Chesapeake.
    • In 1989, a new four-lane expressway opened from the Chesapeake interchange to the 1989 interchange, an incomplete trumpet interchange with stub ramps. A four-lane connector route was completed from the 1989 interchange to the Robert C. Byrd Bridge. This was signed as State Route 7 and also as State Route 527 which continues across the bridge.
    • The two-lane Chesapeake interchange ramp system was narrowed from two to one-lane, serving traffic from eastbound State Route 7 to downtown Chesapeake only.

Proctorville Bypass

  • The Proctorville bypass has been proposed since the early-1960's as a realignment of State Route 7. The first phase of the project was completed in 1989, stretching from the "Chesapeake interchange" to the "1989 interchange," and including the four-lane connector highway State Route 527 to the Robert C. Byrd Bridge.
    • In 2002, work began on State Route 607, a connector road that currently runs from the East Huntington Bridge/West Virginia Route 106 to a stub in Proctorville, also known as Phase 1A. It is currently being extended to meet with the State Route 7 bypass north of the town as part of Phase 1B.
    • In the summer of 2003, the $26 million Phase 1B segment of the Proctorville bypass commenced. It originally had a target completion date of early 2006, however, this has been pushed back to late 2006 or even 2007. Phase 1B is being designed and constructed as a two-lane limited-access facility with interchanges, with expansion possible to four-lanes. When complete, it will stretch from the future State Route 607 interchange to State Route 7 east of Proctorville.
    • In the late 1960's, a two-lane relocated State Route 7 from just east of Proctorville to Athalia was completed on a four-lane right-of-way. This was to connect to the 1961 four-lane U.S. Route 52 alignment that ended in Chesapeake. Phase 1B of the State Route 7 bypass project will tie in with this segment.
    • The only segment not completed nor funded is from the 1989 interchange in Chesapeake to the beginning of Phase 1B at the State Route 607 interchange.

Pomeroy Bypass

  • The Pomeroy bypass from Middleport east to U.S. Route 33 was completed in 1968. At the time of completion, the bypass was two lanes but was upgraded to four lanes, divided, in 1976 from State Route 143 to U.S. Route 33 near Rock Springs.
  • The bypass was extended east in 2000 from Rock Springs to a partial diamond interchange with State Route 7 as a four-lane divided expressway. It was initially signed just State Route 7. The diamond interchange was later completed with all connections, and the highway was extended eastward to Ravenswood, West Virginia as U.S. Route 33.
