With the success of Eric Idle's musical retelling of Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Spamalot, Idle announced that he was giving Life of Brian a similar treatment. The oratorio, called Not the Messiah, was commissioned to be part of Luminato, the Toronto Festival of Arts, Culture and Creativity, in June 2007, and was written and scored by Idle and John Du Prez, who also worked with Idle on Spamalot. Just as Life of Brian was meant as a spoof of the life of Jesus, Not the Messiah is a direct spoof of Handel's famous oratorio Messiah. It runs approximately 60 minutes, and was conducted at its World Premiere by Toronto Symphony Orchestra (TSO) music director Peter Oundjian, who is Idle's cousin. (Their mothers are sisters.) At the Toronto shows, it was performed in three parts. First, Idle addressed the audience directly in a brief monologue. He left the stage, and Oundjian conducted four classical pieces performed by the TSO, including Sousa's Liberty Bell March, which is well known as the Monty Python theme.
