Neighboring towns are Wallingford and Durham to the north, Guilford to the east, Branford to the south, and North Haven and East Haven to the west. As of the census2 of 2000, there were 13,906 people (6,303 of which reside in the village of Northford), 5,132 households, and 3,869 families residing in the town. The population density was 215.5/km² (558.0/mi²). There were 5,246 housing units at an average density of 81.3/km² (210.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the town was 96.50% White, 1.19% African American, 0.06% Native American, 0.92% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.47% from other races, and 0.84% from two or more races.
