The Nlaka'pamux (commonly called "the Thompson", and also Thompson River Salish, Thompson Salish, Thompson River Indians or Thompson River people) are an indigenous First Nations/Native American people of Salish ethnicity in southern British Columbia and northern Washington. Other names

Frontier-era histories and maps transliterate this name as Hakamaugh or Klackarpun; they were also known as the Couteau, Kootomin or Knife Indians (Kootomin is a nativized variants of the Fr. couteau).


Nlaka'pamux is also the name of the the Nlaka'pamux Nation Tribal Council, which is one of three regional governments covering all Nlaka'pamux communities.

The Nlaka'pamux Nation Tribal Council does not include all Nlaka'pamux people, but is one of three main tribal bodies within the region, the others being the Fraser Canyon Indian Administration and the Nicola Valley Tribal Council:

There are 16 different communities that make up the Nlaka'pamux Nation, none of which are in the British Columbia Treaty Commission process at present.


These communities are considered to be Nlaka'pamux despite not sharing a common organization. Those in the Nicola Valley call themselves Scw'exmx, and belong to the Nicola Valley Tribal Council, which includes the Okanagan-speaking Spaxomin of Douglas Lake, who are part of the Upper Nicola Indian Band. The Siska Band, though belonging to the Nicola Valley Tribal Council, is located in the Fraser Canyon between Lytton and Boston Bar. The Scwexmx are a branch of the Nlakapamux (Thompson) people in the Nicola Valley of the Canadian province of British Columbia. ...
