History

While the roots of Nipissing University extend back to the 1950s, Nipissing University College was formed in 1967 as an affiliate of Laurentian University. Nipissing University received its charter as an independent University in 1992. Today, Nipissing is proud to be a small, primarily undergraduate university with a reputation for excellence in teacher education, arts, science, business and nursing, with a welcoming, high-quality academic environment for its students based on teaching and learning, and with a developing research culture. Nipissing is committed to playing a positive role in the educational, social, cultural and economic life of North Bay and northeastern Ontario. 1967 (MCMLXVII) was a common year starting on Sunday of the Gregorian calendar (the link is to a full 1967 calendar). ... Student Life

Activities


There are many year-round activities to enjoy, both on and off-campus. From viewing the beautiful fall colours along Duchesney Falls in September to cross-country skiing and snowshoeing in winter, you’ll have every opportunity to enjoy 20 kilometres of trails right on-campus. Students can sign out cross-country skis and snowshoes free-of-charge from the Athletics Centre. Outdoor enthusiasts may also want to check out Jack Pine Hill, located just 10 minutes from Nipissing. This facility is well-known for its mountain biking in the summer and its downhill skiing, snowboarding and tubing in the winter. During the winter season you can also take in a “good-ole-hockey game” as North Bay’s Junior ‘A’ hockey team, The Skyhawks, defeat their opponents at Memorial Gardens (the Skyhawks were NOJHL champions in 2003). Nipissing also has a student newspaper called The Hibou.


Lakes


Lake Nipissing and Trout Lake are located right in North Bay providing you with beautiful beaches, bike paths, great fishing spots and boating options that include cruising Lake Nipissing aboard the Chief Commanda II. For those who like to swim indoors, North Bay’s YMCA recently opened the Aquatic Centre. This facility includes a fully accessible 25 metre multi-lane pool and therapeutic, shallow and wading pools. Transportation


Although you could hike and bike your way around North Bay, a city transit pass is included, as part of your student incidental fees. For those scholars from outside North Bay who require a visit home (laundry anyone?), transportation options are readily available. The bus/train station and airport are only 15 minutes from campus.

North Bay offers a range of shopping choices. Enjoy one-stop shopping in our two malls featuring stores like The Gap, West 49, SportChek and Coles. For a one-of-a-kind shopping experience, explore North Bay’s downtown.


Culture


The Capitol Centre, a beautiful Art Deco building in the middle of downtown, is host to internationally renowned musical and theatrical performances. However, theatre in the city doesn’t stop there! North Bay has many professional theatre groups including the Nipissing Stage Company, located on-campus, and our own student company, Students on Stage. The city attracts many bands such as Barenaked Ladies, Our Lady Peace, Sloan, Tea Party, Sum 41 and Treble Charger. Many perform right at our campus pub, The Wall.


Security


North Bay has a population of 56,000 and is considered one of the safest cities in which to live.


Campuses

Nipissing Univeristy has one main campus, as well as two satellite campuses located in Bracebridge/ Muskoka and Brantford Ontario.


Muskoka Campus


In August of 1996, Nipissing University opened a satellite campus in Bracebridge, the heart of Muskoka. The campus offers students the opportunity to study full-time or part-time towards three different Arts and Science degrees; Child and Family Studies, Culture and the Arts or a 3-year liberal arts degree. Students can also opt to do more course work in a specific discipline, positioning themselves for further studies towards an Honours degree which would be completed from our North Bay campus. Classes are taught in small, personalized settings. The campus provides access to special support programs, including -- Career Counseling, Job Search, Academic Skills Programs, Peer Tutoring resources and individualized assistance for special needs students. Muskoka Campus applicants are also eligible for Nipissing University entrance scholarships and bursaries.


Brantford Campus


Brantford campus is a satellite campus of Nipissing University. The campus offers education courses for professional development and part-time Master’s of Education courses. Through a partnership with Wilfrid Laurier University, Brantford also offers a unique concurrent Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Education degree. Nipissing University has a long history of offering quality professional development courses for school teachers. We are pleased that we now are able to offer on-site Additional Qualification courses to Brantford area teachers. The Master of Education program is available at the Brantford campus on a part-time basis. Follow our links to see which courses are available. The new Nipissing University/Wilfrid Laurier concurrent program is offered only at the Brantford campus. In this program graduates receive both a Bachelor of Arts degree from Wilfrid Laurier University and a Bachelor of Education degree from Nipissing University
