With a budget of more than A$7 billion, over 2200 schools and total enrolments of almost 800,000 students, the department claims to be "the largest single organisation, public or private, in Australia." DET spends roughly one quarter of the State's total budget each year. The DET is one of the biggest school systems in the world and the largest in the southern hemisphere. It also runs one of the largest wide area (computer) networks in the world. They have also started to implement across the board a portal that restricts the students access to the internet. This has been done to avoid students accessing sites of forbidden material. It has also been done to lower the costs of provision by reducing bandwith. After this was proposed, the Department of Education and Training received much opposition from the student body.
