New Hartford is a town located in Litchfield County, Connecticut. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 6,088.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 98.8 km˛ (38.1 mi˛). 95.9 km˛ (37.0 mi˛) of it is land and 2.9 km˛ (1.1 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 2.91% water.


As of the census2 of 2000, there are 6,088 people, 2,228 households, and 1,748 families residing in the town. The population density is 63.5/km˛ (164.4/mi˛). There are 2,368 housing units at an average density of 24.7/km˛ (64.0/mi˛). The racial makeup of the town is 97.67% White, 0.64% African American, 0.05% Native American, 0.74% Asian, 0.07% Pacific Islander, 0.20% from other races, and 0.64% from two or more races. 1.35% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 2,228 households out of which 38.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 68.9% are married couples living together, 6.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 21.5% are non-families. 16.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 4.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.72 and the average family size is 3.07.

In the town the population is spread out with 26.9% under the age of 18, 4.4% from 18 to 24, 31.0% from 25 to 44, 28.7% from 45 to 64, and 8.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 100.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 97.6 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $69,321, and the median income for a family is $78,065. Males have a median income of $52,077 versus $36,946 for females. The per capita income for the town is $30,429. 1.6% of the population and 1.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 0.0% of those under the age of 18 and 3.1% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

New Hartford Historical Society - Isaac Steele (1132 words)
It reached Hartford by the next day, April 20 [1775], and probably was known in New Hartford about the same time.
Isaac and Dorothy Steele made their home in New Hartford on Town Hill and were the parents of five children - one son, Roderick, and four daughters.
About 1810 Isaac and Isaac Pitkin Steele constructed a new house for the son just a few rods to the south of the original saltbox house and the older house was torn down.
