The relief decreases from West to east. In the West there are mountains from the Eastern Carpathians group with heights over 1800 m, the most impressive being the Mount Ceahlău. Along the Bicaz River an impressive canyon has formed - the Cheile Bicazului. The construction of the Bicaz Dam in the 1950s on the Bistriţa River lead to the appearance of the Lake Bicaz (Izvorul Muntelui Lake) the biggest artificial lake on the interior waters of Romania.
