The community of Nanisivik is located just inland from Strathcona Sound, near the community of Arctic Bay in Canada's Nunavut Territory. The community was established to service the lead-zinc mine, but is now closed. Due to heavy lead-zinc contamination, hopes have been dashed for Arctic Bay residents to have several of the buildings relocated to housing-short Arctic Bay. Nunavut’s national parks and game sanctuaries are part of the territory’s efforts to conserve the arctic wilderness.
With the signing of the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement Act in 1993 and the establishment of the Nunavut government in 1999, the management of Nunavut’s environment and wildlife is co-managed with the federal government.
