The border guard in the USSR was known as Border Troops or Border Guard Troops, subordinated to the state security agency, NKVD, later renamed to MVD. In 1934 Border Troops were organized under the NKVD in the GUPVO (Chief Directorate of Frontier and Interior Guard (ГУПВО - пограничная и внутренняя охрана))

In 1939 they were recategorized into the GUPV (Chief Directorate of Frontier Guard)

The Border Guard units only saw combat in the earlier years of World War II (1939-42). Another problem were German Brandenburger Regiment commandos. They had obtained NKVD Border Troop uniforms and led many infiltration missions across the Russian lines to do sabotage work. These spies weren't helpful to the border units' integrity and ability to operate. The Brandenburger Regiment was a German commando unit during World War II.
