Muncy Township is a township located in Lycoming County, Pennsylvania. As of the 2000 census, the township had a total population of 1,059.


Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 40.8 km˛ (15.8 mi˛). 40.5 km˛ (15.6 mi˛) of it is land and 0.4 km˛ (0.1 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 0.89% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 1,059 people, 418 households, and 323 families residing in the township. The population density is 26.2/km˛ (67.8/mi˛). There are 437 housing units at an average density of 10.8/km˛ (28.0/mi˛). The racial makeup of the township is 97.54% White, 0.09% African American, 0.94% Native American, 0.38% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.19% from other races, and 0.85% from two or more races. 0.66% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 418 households out of which 27.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 69.1% are married couples living together, 5.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 22.7% are non-families. 19.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.49 and the average family size is 2.85.


In the township the population is spread out with 22.8% under the age of 18, 5.2% from 18 to 24, 26.2% from 25 to 44, 29.2% from 45 to 64, and 16.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 42 years. For every 100 females there are 92.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.9 males.


The median income for a household in the township is $36,111, and the median income for a family is $40,595. Males have a median income of $29,762 versus $22,135 for females. The per capita income for the township is $20,621. 10.4% of the population and 6.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 13.0% of those under the age of 18 and 4.5% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

William Ellis Haines was born in Pennsdale, Muncy Township, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania, July 7, 1872, the son of Jesse and Mary Whitacre Eckroyd Haines.
Fort Muncy, built in 1778 by Captain Andrew Walker, stood a few hundred yards north of the mansion and was a rallying point for the settlers until it was destroyed by the British and Indians, under command of Captain John McDonald, as he marched down the valley to capture Fort Freeland.
Hower was born in Milton, Pennsylvania, February 21, 1845, the son of Nicholas and Elizabeth (Dreisbach) Hower, natives of Northampton County.
