Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,093 km² (422 mi²). 1,082 km² (418 mi²) of it is land and 11 km² (4 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.00% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 14,897 people, 5,890 households, and 4,176 families residing in the county. The population density is 14/km² (36/mi²). There are 7,771 housing units at an average density of 7/km² (19/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 93.66% White, 3.41% Black or African American, 0.35% Native American, 0.08% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.26% from other races, and 2.24% from two or more races. 0.41% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 5,890 households out of which 30.90% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.90% are married couples living together, 9.90% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.10% are non-families. 25.50% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.00% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.50 and the average family size is 2.98.


In the county, the population is spread out with 25.30% under the age of 18, 7.80% from 18 to 24, 26.30% from 25 to 44, 25.00% from 45 to 64, and 15.60% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 96.50 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.90 males.


The median income for a household in the county is $28,868, and the median income for a family is $34,973. Males have a median income of $30,411 versus $21,039 for females. The per capita income for the county is $13,967. 18.40% of the population and 15.70% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 25.10% of those under the age of 18 and 12.40% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
