Moravian Academy traces its origins to the Moravians, who settled Bethlehem, Pennsylvania in 1741. The Academy descends from the first school for girls founded in the American colonies, Moravian Seminary, founded in 1742 by Countess Benigna von Zinzendorf. It is the ninth oldest independent school in the United States. In 1971, Moravian Seminary for Girls and Moravian Preparatory School merged, creating Moravian as it is today. While it has a strong religious background, Moravian Academy is now considered to be somewhat secular, with only non-denominational weekly chapel services for students.


Moravian is made up of three divisions: The Upper, Middle and Lower Schools. The Upper School is located on Green Pond Campus, and the Lower and Middle Schools are located in downtown Bethlehem. The Middle School is based in the Devey Building, dedicated to Mr. Devey, a former headmaster, and the 7 East building.


The Lower School comprises Pre-kindergarten through 5th grade, the Middle School comprises 6th through 8th, and the Upper School contains grades 9 through 12.

Notable events

1993 botched robbery

In 1993 a man fled a local bank after a botched robbery attempt and ran into the main middle school building. Police quickly evacuated the students to a school owned gymnasium and surrounded the building. The man was found hiding in the boiler room and was apprehended without incident.


Scholastic Scrimmage

In 2006, Moravian Academy took second place in Pennsylvania's Scholastic Scrimmage, losing to Allentown Central Catholic High School in the finals. Scholastic Scrimmage is a high school quiz bowl game show airing on WLVT-TV and WPSU-TV (formerly WPSX-TV), and is hosted by Karen Walton and David Price respectively. ... Moravian Junior in 2007 "Teen Jeopardy" Final

Ben Schenkel, Class of 2008 was the runner-up in the 2007 Teen Tournament on the television game show "Jeopardy." The two game final aired on Thursday and Friday, February 15-16, 2007. His total take-home winnings were $42,800.
