Modena is a borough located in Chester County, Pennsylvania. As of the 2000 census, the borough had a total population of 610.


Geography

Modena is located at 39°57'44" North, 75°48'8" West (39.962256, -75.802158)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 0.9 km˛ (0.3 mi˛). 0.9 km˛ (0.3 mi˛) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 610 people, 200 households, and 160 families residing in the borough. The population density is 713.7/km˛ (1,847.4/mi˛). There are 211 housing units at an average density of 246.9/km˛ (639.0/mi˛). The racial makeup of the borough is 75.57% White, 18.03% African American, 0.49% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 1.80% from other races, and 4.10% from two or more races. 11.64% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 200 households out of which 45.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.5% are married couples living together, 23.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 20.0% are non-families. 14.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 3.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.05 and the average family size is 3.33.


In the borough the population is spread out with 36.4% under the age of 18, 8.4% from 18 to 24, 32.1% from 25 to 44, 15.9% from 45 to 64, and 7.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 29 years. For every 100 females there are 95.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 84.8 males.


The median income for a household in the borough is $36,125, and the median income for a family is $34,000. Males have a median income of $32,000 versus $24,375 for females. The per capita income for the borough is $12,269. 24.7% of the population and 23.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 29.4% of those under the age of 18 and 40.4% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

In November 1963 a tour through the Modena Mill with the able and genial Mill Manager, Dr. Horace B. Faber, as guide showed that the plant was seeking to meet the challenge of an ever changing scene by the installation of more efficient equipment and the constant improvement in the quality of its products.
A native of York County, Pennsylvania, he is a graduate of Yale University and received the Ph.D. degree from the Institute of Paper Chemistry at Appleton, Wisconsin.
When visiting the Modena paper mill in the autumn of 1963 it was learned that this mill continued to have a water right to water from the Dennis Run and that it had equipment to pump water from it to the Modena plant.
