The Minister of Western Economic Diversification is the member of the Cabinet of Canada who also serves as the chief executive of Western Economic Diversification Canada. The post is traditionally held by an MP from Western Canada, although occasionally the responsibilities have been accorded to a more senior cabinet minister, such as the Industry minister.


The current Western Economic Diversification Minister is Stephen Owen.

Conservative Party of Canada MP Carol Skelton was first elected on November 27, 2000 as the Member of Parliament for Saskatoon - Rosetown - Biggar.  She was re-elected by a much larger margin on June 28, 2004 and again for a third consecutive term on January 23, 2006.
On February 6, 2006, she became the first elected female Minister from Saskatchewan.  She was appointed, and continues as, the Minister of National Revenue and the Minister of Western Economic Diversification.

As part of the reorganization announced by the Prime Minister in December 2003, the department is led by the Minister of Western Economic Diversification.
The department actively engages westerners in consultations to identify needs and priorities, and to develop the kinds of partnerships required to respond to horizontal and complex issues that cannot be managed unilaterally.
