History

The RockHounds were previously known as both the Midland Cubs and Midland Angels during their years in existence. Midland was affiliated with the Chicago Cubs from 1972-1984, and then with the California Angels from 1985-1998. A number of future great players have come through Midland on their way to the major leagues. Barry Zito is a former RockHound, and won the Cy Young Award with the Oakland Athletics in 2002. Former RockHound Mark Bellhorn went on to become a crucial postseason contributer in Boston Red Sox' 2004 World Series championship. Several stars of the 2002 world champion Anaheim Angels were former Midland Angels, including Troy Glaus, Tim Salmon and others. Bruce Sutter, who pitched for the Midland Cubs in 1974-75, was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2006, and was the first Midland player to enter the Hall. Sutter learned to throw his trademark split-finger fastball in Midland, and was part of the Midland Cubs 1975 Double-A Texas League championship team. Winner of the National League Cy Young Award in 1979, Sutter was also a key part of the 1982 World Series winning St. Louis Cardinals.
