Memorial Union (University of Wisconsin-Madison) Image File history File links Memorial_Union. ...

Memorial Union, also known as the Union or the Terrace, is located on the shore of Lake Mendota on the campus of the University of Wisconsin-Madison. It opened in 1928, and is run by the Wisconsin Union, an alumni organization. It has gained a reputation as both one of the most beautiful and rowdy student unions or student centers on a university campus. Outside the main building is the Memorial Union Terrace, a stone outdoor dining and recreation area on the shore of Lake Mendota. It is a popular spot for socializing among students, as well as the public, while gazing at the lake and the sailboats that are often present on the lake. The union is also known for 'der Rathskeller' a German pub in the Union that directly connects to the lake terrace. Political debates and backgammon games are common among students over a beer on the terrace. Daniel Tenenbaum is the current student czar of the Memorial Union, a new position created in 2005 to allow for increased undergraduate input into cultural programming and business affairs.
