The MUHC is officially a bilingual institution, providing services in both French and English, as well as a number of other languages, as necessary. The MUHC is planning on closing its current hospital facilities and replacing them with a "superhospital" at the Glen Yards near Vendôme metro station. This plan has encountered a variety of problems and cost overruns and remains controversial. By government decree, one of the hospitals in the network is to remain open as a general hospital. Currently the designated hospital to stay open is the General (MGH). The affiliated Jewish General Hospital (JGH), a teaching hospital, will not be merged into the superhospital, nor the MUHC system.


Due to governmental foot dragging, there is a chance that an affiliated non-McGill hospital will be lost and not move to the SuperHospital site. The Shriner's Children's Hospital of Montreal is threatened with closure after the Shriner's search committee recommended that the institution be moved to London, Ontario, instead of rebuilding in Montreal. The current site is too small. This move is opposed by the Shriners of New England, and of Ottawa, as well as the people of Quebec, because it would make access more difficult.
