The massacre was carried out by James Oliver Huberty, a 41 year old former welder from Canton, Ohio. Before leaving for McDonald's his wife Etna asked him where he was going, Huberty responded, "going to hunt humans". Earlier that same day he and his family visited another McDonald's restaurant for lunch, before going to the zoo. While walking around with his wife and two daughters he made the comment to his wife, "society had its chance".

Huberty used a nine-millimeter Uzi semi-automatic (the primary weapon fired in the massacre), a Winchester pump-action twelve-gauge shotgun, and a nine-millimeter Browning semi-automatic pistol in the restaurant, killing 21 people and wounding 19 others. Huberty's victims were predominantly Mexican and Mexican-American and ranged in age from eight months to 74 years. The massacre began at 4 p.m. and lasted for 77 minutes. Huberty had spent 257 rounds of ammunition before he was fatally shot by Chuck Foster, a SWAT team sniper perched on the roof next door. Although Huberty stated during the massacre that he had killed thousands in Vietnam, he had never really served in any military branch in his life. There was speculation that schizophrenia led him to believe that he had actually served in the war itself.

The Property

On 26 September 1984, McDonald's tore down the restaurant where the massacre occurred and gave the property to the city, which opened San Ysidro Southwestern Community College there. In front of the school is a memorial to the massacre victims, consisting of 21 hexagonal granite pillars ranging in height from one to six feet. In 1986 Etna Huberty, his widow, unsuccessfully sued McDonald's and Babcock and Wilcox, James Huberty's longtime former employer, in an Ohio state court for $7.88 million, claiming that the massacre was triggered by the combined mixture of McDonald's food and work around poisonous metals. She alleged that monosodium glutamate in the food, combined with the high levels of lead and cadmium in Huberty's body, induced delusions and uncontrollable rage. An autopsy did reveal high levels of the metals, most likely built up from fumes inhaled during 14 years of welding. Autopsy results also revealed there were no drugs or alcohol in his system at the time of the killings. The Sydney River McDonald's Murders

The McDonald's massacre in San Diego was not the only murder incident at a McDonald's franchise in North America. On May 7th, 1992, the McDonald's restaurant in Sydney River, Nova Scotia was the scene of more homicides. Derek Wood, 19, an employee of the restaurant along with two friends, Freeman MacNeil, 23, and Darren Muise, 18, broke into the restaurant after closing, planning to rob the place. They shot, stabbed, and beat three employees to death and left a fourth to die after shooting her in the head. She is now permanently disabled. The killers claim they had not planned on using any violence in the break and enter; it was to be quick and easy money. Yet MacNeil, Muise, and Wood inched their way into the restaurant via a basement door Wood had left ajar earlier in the evening and wore halloween masks. They were armed with a .22 caliber pistol, several knives, and a shovel handle. Expecting to find over $200,000 in the restaurant's safe, the three made off with just over $2,000.

Freeman MacNeil is now in a maximum security prison in Renous, New Brunswick serving 25 years until parole eligibility is reached. Darren Muise received the same sentence. Derek Wood, however, was handed two terms of life imprisonment for first degree murder and attempted murder, as well as two ten year terms for unlawful confinement and the armed robbery. The Massacre of Glencoe (2229 words)
It is this Campbell connection, and the fact that the McDonalds of Glencoe had, over many years, made a habit of visiting rape and pillage on their southern Campbell neighbours, which gave rise to the oversimplified account of an inter-clan blood-letting.
It is not explained why he didn't find a less dramatic way of achieving the same result (and one which didn't leave him with a screaming child that was supposed to be dead) so that story may well be a just colourful tale but it is one which creates the possibility of an melodramatic sequel.
Robert Campbell, aged fifty nine at the time of the massacre and the oldest officer in the regiment, was not highly regarded as a soldier in some quarters.
McDonald's (2000 words)
In contrast to the fast food stereotypes of McDonalds in the United States where it is seen as cheap, convenient, low quality food, in parts of the world such as Russia and China, McDonald's food is seen as a status symbol and the restaurants are admired for their atmosphere and cleanliness.
McDonalds has taken steps to cater to Jewish customers by opening a kosher McDonalds in Jerusalem and by offering a 'Passover Bun' for the eight-day period in which practicing Jews abstain from leavened bread.
McDonald's won the case: however, many of the campaigners' criticisms of the company were found to be fair, creating a great deal of bad publicity for the company.
