Kuchar was born in Winter Park, Florida. He attended Georgia Tech and was a distinguished member of the golf team – a two-time first-team All-American. In 1997, he won the United States Men's Amateur Golf Championship. Kuchar received the Fred Haskins award in 1998 as the nation's top collegiate golfer. Kuchar, 23, shot a 6-under 66 in the final round of the Honda Classic and beat Brad Faxon (67) and Joey Sindelar (70) by two strokes.
Kuchar extended the lead to two strokes with another birdie on the par-5 16th, and made sure no one could tie him with a solid par save on the tough, par-4 18th.
Kuchar was a college sophomore when he graced Augusta National with a wide-eyed gaze to go with a game good enough to tie for 21st and earn an invitation back to The Masters.

In the summer of 1997, Matt Kuchar was sorting out the effects of his freshman year at Georgia Tech, playing some golf and hanging out like any other 19-year-old from Lake Mary.
Kuchar swept the golf world off its feet with his smile and game, right under the shadow of "Tiger" in the first round.
Kuchar also experienced another occurrence during the final round of the U.S. Open that may just affect him most times he plays in is tournament from here on out.
