Matt lived in New Hampshire until the age of four until his family moved to West Springfield, Massachusetts. He has been involved with music since he was very young. He has played the piano ever since he was 5 years old, and picked up the clarinet in elementary school. By the time he got to junior high school, he begged his parents for a guitar and started his first band, Nameless Fear. He played in Nameless Fear from the ages of 13-17. He eventually left to play bass for the band Lost Inside a Rubix Cube (who later changed their name to The Amber Fashion). Matt started taking guitar lessons from the lead guitar player of All That Remains, and eventually started playing bass for the band. During his time in All That Remains, Deis co-wrote and played bass on their album This Darkened Heart. World touring with such bands as Gwar, Slipknot, As I Lay Dying, and Killswitch Engage followed. The band continues to tour in support of their latest album An Answer Can Be Found.
