The highway starts at Interstate 195 and travels north, merging with Route 24 around Exit 7 (Fall River). From here it runs concurrently with Route 24 North until Exit 9 (Assonet). South of, and including, the Route 24 portion, Route 79 is a freeway, but not up to Interstate Highway standards.
